We have been long-time customers and friends of the folks from Equation Coffee, which manages the Creativa Coffee District and La Palma y El Tucan projects. When they invited us to visit their brand new venture in March 2023, we knew it was going to be a real treat.

Flying Pumas is situated near the top of the ridge that separates the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic Ocean, at an elevation range of 1650-2200 meters. This 178-hectare project hosts 60 hectares of specialty coffee grown under regenerative agriculture practices and 118 hectares of untouched forest.

Bordering the International Amistad Park, this forest is home to Pumas, Jaguars, Ocelots, Jaguarundi, and other spectacular animals that make this a magical place. Walking near these parts of the farm makes you feel like you’re part of something bigger than yourself. It is in honor to these big cats that they call themselves Flying Pumas.

The gesha varietal is the most common variety among the coffee trees. Flying Pumas also grow other varietals like Pacas, Sidra, Typica, Bourbon, SL 28 and Catuai. This mix creates a healthy diversity of coffees for the environment and a wide range of varieties for their customers.

The team started planting coffee trees in 2019 and, in 2023, these young trees started to shine. This is attributed to the ideal mix of volcanic soil, native shade trees, solar radiation, and cool temperatures. Their use of biochar and in-farm supplies helps to sequester carbon from the atmosphere while nurturing their coffee trees. Planting native trees along the coffee trees has helped them increase shade, enrich their soils, and promote biodiversity in areas of the farm which were once pasture.
The Flying Pumas team is also extremely lucky to collaborate with the local Ngobe-Bugle people who help to plant, prune, fertilize, and harvest the coffee trees.

This particular Lot 1 stood out from the cupping table with its vibrant fruity flavors of cherry and hibiscus, with a smooth red tea finish, and we are absolutely thrilled to showcase this coffee from Flying Pumas' inaugural harvest.
