When our friends at Catur Coffee Company told us that they were experimenting with producing Kopi Luwak without the actual Luwak (civet cat), we were intrigued and truly excited to support this project.

Kopi Luwak is famously known for its controversial practices of force feeding coffee cherries to civet cats kept in cages, and obtained from wild civet feces. To eliminate such practices of animal cruelty, Catur developed an innovative inoculant to produce animal-free civet coffee, a breakthrough endeavour that prioritizes ethics in coffee processing.

To carry this out, Catur separated special microbes from civet cat feces and prioritizes those with high levels of the Fumarase Enzyme. This retains significant levels of Fumaric acid, which is an important component in the production of traditional Luwak coffee.

This sustainable approach ensures the production of alternative Luwak coffee that is free of animal abuse, while maintaining the characteristics of Luwak coffee that people enjoy.

In November 2023, our team participated in the 21st edition of The Sensory Project in Indonesia, in a three-way collaboration alongside Catur and Space Roastery. Catur sourced and processed this coffee, our team roasted the coffee and Space Roastery designed and distributed the coffee to home brewers in Indonesia. We are grateful to be a part of an international collaborative project, especially when it features an innovative, sustainable and delicious coffee like this one.
