Our team was fortunate to have visited “Pocho”, Jose Gallardo Arauz, and his family earlier this year at their farm Finca Nuguo.

Finca Nuguo is located in Jurutungo, in the province of Chiriqui in Panama. It has five hectares of productive geisha plants, divided in six zones that are surrounded by forest in the neighborhood of the La Amistad International Park nature reserve, at high altitudes of 1,800 - 1,950 masl.

In the 1970s, the family farm run by José Manuel Gallardo Sr. only produced Caturra and Catuai coffee varieties at lower elevations. However, only around 10 years ago, Pocho saw the potential of his small 5-hectare farm and started growing Geshas. Pocho utilized his PhD in Civil Engineering, coupled with his extreme dedication and passion for producing the best Panamanian coffees, to gradually elevate the quality at Finca Nuguo year after year. Since then, Finca Nuguo has become well-known all over the world for their exceptional geshas, excelling in many coffee competitions as well as the Best of Panama auction each year.

From our recent visit, we were fortunate to have chosen a few exceptional lots to share with you back home. This lot 501 gesha was first pulped and fermented as whole cherries for an extended period, at a cool temperature in an enclosed box. After that, the coffee underwent a traditional washed process. This coffee is sweet and delicate, like apples and sweet tangerines, and finishes off elegantly, reminiscent of white lilies.
