Sol de la Mañana, which means “morning sun”, is Agricafe’s social initiative to give back to the Bolivian coffee community. In the past decade, there has been a steady decline in Bolivian coffee production, due to factors such as direct competition with coca production, poor infrastructure and leaf rust. To counter this, The Los Rodriguez family launched the Sol de la Mañana program in 2014, to teach producers effective farming practices to increase their production yields and sustain the future of Bolivian coffees.

This initiative is a ‘school’ for producers, and currently 80 producers from the Caranavi region are enrolled, most of them longtime multi-generational coffee producers. They have to undergo a strict curriculum that involves modern techniques, with frequent deadlines to hit and milestones to achieve. As a result of this stringent yet immersive program, the average production per producer grew from 5 - 8 bags per hectare, to around 25 bags per hectare in recent years. The tangible results have also encouraged younger generations to continue their family business, ensuring a continuity of quality Bolivian coffees in the future.

Our team visited one of the Sol de la Mañana producers in late 2023, Gregorio Palli. Gregorio is a long-term participant of the program, and his efforts have reaped results, as his harvests last for 5 months a year. He produces mostly Caturra and Catuai and this washed process lot that we picked is a blend of both varietals, showcasing juicy fruit like peach, apple, with a lasting cane sugar sweetness.
